What is the Resistance Training Specialist ® (RTS) program?

RTS is an education organisation specialising in the study and application of exercise mechanics. Each of the team at Integra has studied with the RTS organisation, with Michael Goulden being the UK's first to achieve the RTS Mastery Level award.

They offer educational courses and programs in the US and internationally with the mission of changing the perception of what exercise is and can be, by bringing substance and objectivity to how we study, teach, and apply exercise.

What is the education process?

The RTS program is broken into three levels:

  • RTS123 - is a 6 day program offered internationally. The RTS123 program was created as a basic introduction to the principles of RTS.
  • RTS - Mastery Level - consists of 5 basic modules and further complimentary workshops and electives.
  • The Mastery Level RTS exam is a two day process that includes:
    • A four hour one-on-one verbal examination covering RTSM Science.
    • Presentation of randomly assigned portions of the RTSM courses including structural analysis, machine analysis, and exercise analysis to other examinees.
    • Physical demonstration of Exercise Experience™ including exercise performance and cues
  • RTS Mastery Electives - Mastery Electives are advanced experiences designed to further the education and thought processes at the mastery level. They are presented by Tom Purvis and/or guest experts in specific advanced topics. Programs and topics have included included:
    • Neuroscience
    • Cadavar Anatomy
    • Motor Learning
    • Equipment Analysis

Why is RTS different?

From aerobics to strength, functional training to aesthetics, Pilates to powerlifting, stretching to sport specific, all exercise is based upon forces and joints!

For everything else that is happening, i.e. neural, metabolic, recruitment... objectively all exercise truly boils down to forces on joints! And when you're talking about forces and joints, you're talking about mechanics!

RTS specializes in the principles and application of Exercise Mechanics including:

  • Structural Anatomy... anatomical "architecture." The shape, function, and interrelationships of the various structures, both in general and specific to the individual client or patient. This goes far beyond the anatomy taught in schools and certifications that is little more than "body geography" (names and locations.)
  • The effects on and by the neuromuscular system including recruitment and the internal force generating capabilities of the individual.
  • The effects of the ranges and patterns of movement specific to the exercise.
  • The effects of the exercise-specific direction and application of the external forces upon the joints and tissues.
